“Do Velho se Faz Novo” (Old Makes New) is a Portuguese pilot project that encourages and rewards the return of non-reusable PET plastic bottles for recycling and incorporation as a raw material in the production of new drinks bottles. The project covered a total of 23 automatic collection machines installed in large shopping centers in mainland Portugal.
At these locations, consumers were able to hand in their used, non-reusable PET plastic drinks bottles.
The plastic drinks bottles were collected under the responsibility of the packaging and packaging waste management entities, through waste management operators, and sent for recycling and incorporation as a raw material in the production of new drinks bottles.
